Our first dog, and I always wanted a greyhound. It was wonderful. He was a goofy big 3-year old white boy with black brindle ears. We were a little inexperienced and gave him the run of the house. We were lucky. He never got into trouble. He was loving and playful and so fun. Every night we'd tuck him in downstairs on his big bed and go to up to bed ourselves.
One night we were awoken by a terrible banging noise. We flew downstairs to find Pharaoh thrashing and banging his head on the radiator! It was so scary. We called the emergency clinic ASAP to ask what could be happening. We described what happened, and they said he was having a seizure. We were to keep an eye on him, turn off all the lights, and if he didn't have another one to call our own vet in the morning. He didn't and we did just that.
Some tests were done to rule out anything metabolic (tumors, etc.). He was diagnosed as idiopathic epileptic. We started a very reasonably priced medication (Phenobarbital). It was easy to administer and Pharaoh did very well on it. Although Pharaoh had a very severe form of the disease (our second seizure dog lived to be 12 ½), we still had five more years with him. And they were wonderful. He was our first and quite frankly, our favorite. It was well worth working with through the seizures with him. It made us and our love for him stronger.
